Principal's Message:

Dear Parents:

Susan B. Anthony was notified by the California Department of Education that our school met all its STAR accountability targets for the 2009-2010 school year. This means that we met our Academic Performance Index (API) with a score of 750. In addition, we met all our Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) targets. This was great news for our school! It serves as testimony for the dedication of our staff and the hard work of our students.

Respectfully,
Candas Colen

Our school district is considering a Hmong Immersion Program at Susan B. Anthony for the 2011-2012 school year. The program will begin with kindergarten and first grade classes.

What is dual language immersion?

- Uses Hmong and English for instruction
- Serves English Learners and native English speakers
- Includes high levels of proficiency in new language and home language
- Increases use of English gradually

The goals of the Hmong Immersion classes will be for students to be proficient in both English and Hmong languages to increase academic achievement.

If you want to learn more about this program, please plan to attend our community meeting.

Where: Susan B. Anthony Elementary, Multipurpose Room
When: March 29, 2011
Time: 6:00 p.m.

This is an informational meeting with District officials Lee Yang, Dr. Mao Vang, and Kao Lee. You will also meet the teachers of the program. Hope to see you there!

Susan B. Anthony’s Saturday School began March 5. We have nine classrooms with a total of 95 students. Classes will meet for eight Saturdays. The goal of Saturday School is to provide extra support for students as they prepare to take the STAR test in May. Classes are standards-based in language arts and math. We strongly encourage students to attend every class, every Saturday. As
an incentive, students receive ice cream at the end of each class. In addition, students who attend at least seven weeks will be entered into a drawing for two bicycles, a scooter, and a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. Classes will meet on the following dates:

March 19, 26
April 2, 9, 30
May 7

It’s time to register kindergarten students for the 2010-2011 school year! Beginning
January 10, we encourage all parents to enroll their future kinder students in our school office.
Students must be five years old by December 2, 2011. Please bring the following documents with you for registration: verification of immunizations, birth certificate, and proof of residence. Our office will be open for registration Monday thru Friday from 8:00 - 4:00 p.m. All registration forms must be completed in our school office. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Susan B. Anthony Celebrated Read Across America Day on March 2. It was a fabulous day for our students. The purpose of the day was to encourage our students to read every single day. The day began with a general assembly with storyteller Linda Gorham. She told engaging stories that had our students using movement, humor, and imagination. Each classroom also had several volunteer readers to share books and activities. We had over 50 community members reading stories!

Once again, Susan B. Anthony will participate in the Box Tops for Education Program.
This is a very easy fundraiser for our school. Teachers will be sending home cute seasonal
box top collection forms to make it easier to accumulate. When shopping for groceries, look for the Box Tops logo (see logos below) on hundreds of items like Cheerios, Hamburger Helper, and Kleenex. Products with this logo can be found in almost every aisle of the grocery store. All you need to do is to have your child take them to school and give them to his/her teacher. Each box top will earn  our school 10 cents. It’s that easy!

BOX TOP CONTEST
Starting January 2, 2011 until March 31, 2011
Grand Prize will be a PIZZA Party!
Prize will be awarded to the primary & intermediate class with the most Box Tops collected.

SBA Wish List. We are grateful to have the support of kind and generous community members. If you have the following items you are not using at home, or find them for a good price at the store, our students would love to have them to use. Items may be dropped off at the office or brought to the classroom by students.

    • Hand Sanitizer
    • Kleenex Tissues

Have a few hours to spare each month? Please consider joining our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). Together, we will build a stronger community and brighter futures for our kids. Please contact the school office for more information.

Office Depot has donated 25 colorful backpacks to our school. If your child needs a backpack, please call Mr. Vue, our Community Liaison, at (916) 433-5353.  He will see to it that your child receives one.

In order to maintain a safe and inviting campus for our students, we’re asking all our neighbors to help keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior around our school and playground. If you have information to report during non-school hours, please call:
